A small country, in the foothills of the Himalayas with a population less than 1 million, it is still a place of beauty and mystique. Even though the altitude in Bhutan is higher than most people are used to, altitude sickness is rare in Bhutan as most valleys are under 2,500 metres, and mountain passes are generally only just over 3000 metres.Visitors to Bhutan usually include Paro, Thimphu and Phunakha, depending on the season you can also include Bumthang for its ancient temples and monasteries, and Phobjika Valley, where the black-necked cranes mass in the winter, including a Crane Festival on November 11th.
